Shaping Melbourne’s future: Site HQ’s role in the West Gate Tunnel Project

Since 2019, Site HQ has supported the delivery of Melbourne’s West Gate Tunnel Project, the city’s largest road infrastructure project since CityLink opened in 1998. Across the six-year engagement, Site HQ supplied more than 3,838 temporary fence panels, 8,091 fence feet and 123 acoustic curtains, making it one of the largest infrastructure deployments in Site HQ’s history.

Delivered as a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban, this city-shaping, multi-billion-dollar project has transformed travel across Melbourne’s west. Spanning a 17-kilometre corridor, the project incorporates a highly complex network of twin tunnels, elevated roadways, bridges, freeway widening works and new connections designed to improve capacity, safety and network resilience for more than 200,000 vehicles every day.

With major construction commencing in 2018 and the tunnel officially opening to traffic in December 2025, the West Gate Tunnel represents one of Victoria’s most significant infrastructure achievements and Site HQ is proud to have played a role in its successful delivery.

Scope of Supply and Installation

Over the course of the project, Site HQ supplied a broad range of temporary works solutions, supporting multiple construction zones simultaneously.

Over the duration of this 6 year project, here are just some of many products the Site HQ team supplied:

This scale reflects not only our extensive product fleet, but also our ability to coordinate and execute complex deliveries across a large, dynamic infrastructure footprint.

In parallel with our sales solutions, the project was supported through products supplied and installed by our hire arm, 1300TempFence. This integrated approach allowed project teams to hire where flexibility was required and purchase where long-term deployment made sense, ensuring continuity, cost efficiency and consistency across the project lifecycle.

Project Outcome

With the West Gate Tunnel now open to traffic, the project will deliver long-term benefits for Melbourne; easing congestion, improving freight efficiency, enhancing active transport connections, and creating safer, more reliable travel across the city’s west.

Site HQ is proud to have supported the successful delivery of this landmark infrastructure project and to have contributed to infrastructure that will benefit Victoria for decades to come.

FAQs

Yes. Site HQ can support large-scale, multi-year infrastructure and civil projects across Australia. Our national branch network, extensive stock holdings and scalable delivery capabilities allow us to coordinate high-volume and staged supply across multiple construction zones. We can supply temporary fencing, fence feet, clamps, shade cloth, acoustic curtains, water-filled barriers, portable toilets and a wide range of additional site equipment throughout the project lifecycle.

Purchasing temporary fencing can be a more economical option when it will be used continuously over a long project or reused across different work zones and future sites. It gives contractors greater control over their fencing assets while reducing ongoing hire costs.

Hiring may be more suitable for shorter-term works, changing quantities or project stages requiring greater flexibility. Through Site HQ and our hire division, 1300TempFence, customers can also combine purchased and hired equipment to create a cost-effective solution tailored to the project.

Site HQ supplies galvanised temporary fencing designed for civil, infrastructure and construction projects. Our fencing features anti-climb weld-mesh infill and can be quickly installed using compatible temporary fence feet and clamps to provide immediate site security.

The 2.4-metre Smart Temporary Fence Panel is a strong, lightweight option weighing only 11 kilograms, making it suitable for one-person handling and easy transport. Where shade cloth, banner mesh or scrim will be attached, we recommend using the heavier-duty Maxi Temporary Fence Panel. Site HQ temporary fencing systems are tested and certified to AS 4687:2022.
