Semi-Permanent Fencing – what is it and why do you need it?

Do you need an option more secure than a temporary fence, but don’t want to go to the full extent of building a permanent fence?

A semi-permanent or spike post fence could be the solution for you. As the name implies, these fences are a more permanent option, offering the best combination of security, stability, and ongoing flexibility. At Site HQ, we offer a full range of semi-permanent fencing options to suit a variety of locations, purposes, and budgets.

Traditional temporary fences have a concrete foot at the base. These plastic-coated blocks provide a stable footing for the fence to sit in, ensuring it remains a sturdy and strong barrier, especially once bracing is added. These are ideal for situations where the fence is dismantled or relocated on-site to allow flexibility during the construction process, and where the fence is installed on an impermeable surface like concrete.

What are semi-permanent fences?

Semi-permanent fences involve embedding a post into the earth, to which the temporary fence panels are attached. This method provides enhanced stability, security, and no trip hazard from the concrete feet. It is suited to areas of fencing on the construction site where security is a greater priority, that are unlikely or less likely to be moved, or where trip hazards may present a problem. Heavy-duty locations such as Site compounds, critical perimeters, walkways, and parking areas are all examples where semi-permanent fence is ideal, as the reliability of the fence is fundamental to maintaining occupational health and safety standards.

What are spike post fences?

Spike post fences offer even more strength and security than semi-permanent fences. These units use ground spikes, which are prefabricated galvanised steel spikes designed to permanently support posts without needing to dig holes or pour concrete foundations. These spikes are simply driven into the ground with a jackhammer or manually hammered in. Once the spike is fixed in the ground, a post is inserted into a receiving pipe on the spike, and the post wedged to secure it in the spike. The temporary fence panels are then attached to the post.

The star-like shape of the spike with its four blade design means there is greater surface area friction with the soil it is embedded in. This friction ensures enormous holding power in the soil, making it an even stronger option than the semi-permanent fencing.

An added advantage of Spike Post Fencing is that panels and posts can be removed, with the spike left in the ground undisturbed. As the spike and blades sit almost flush with the ground, these points can be left in the ground for vehicles or other machinery to drive over the top,

and then the post can be easily re-instated in the spike, and the panels re-attached to secure the fence line.

Why use a semi-permanent or spike post fence?

  1. Sturdy and secure

Semi-permanent and spike post fencing have been rated for horizontal loads and wind resistance, and comply with Australian standards. They provide equivalent or greater wind resistance than a standard concrete foot temporary fence without the need for additional bracing. With increased strength comes increased security, and this gives people the peace of mind that the fence will provide adequate protection.

  1. Reusable

Semi-permanent and spike post fencing is fully recyclable, retrievable, and re-usable. Spikes and posts are fully removed, not cut off at ground level as occurs in many permanent fencing scenarios. This also means no concrete left in the ground to present a hazard or hassle in the future. All products are re-used over and over again.

  1. Variety of uses

For fence installations on earth the versatility of semi-permanent and Spike post Fencing also means our clients have the freedom and flexibility to easily create reliable fencing options whenever and wherever they need.

  1. Footprint

The semi-permanent and Spike fencing system takes up less footprint than traditional temporary fencing options, while still maintaining the same strength. This is ideal for usage in hard to reach or tight locations, and anytime when access to either side of the fence is essential. There is no trip hazard and no need for additional bracing which can take up valuable space on site.
